Christmas is Coming...

The end of year is nigh and we are starting to get ready for Christmas!

Our class have written letters to Santa and we've sent these off to the North Pole.  We are hoping we hear back before the end of the school year.  We wanted copies to take home too, so they're coming home today...

We had buddy class on Friday.  It's always lots of fun.  This time we drew around one another's hands and then coloured them to look like leaves.  We carefully cut around all the fingers and then curled them.  Guess what we were making?  A Christmas Tree!  Over the next few weeks we will make some special decorations.

Karate Super-Star...

We are very proud of our very own Karate super-star, Eshaan.

He and his brother attended a Seido Karate Tournament in Sydney, Australia last week. Eshaan came 1st in his division and his big brother came 2nd.

Today Eshaan brought in his certificates and his trophy to share with the class.  We are all very impressed!  Nice work Eshaan 😀

Solar Energy...

Today we have been talking about Solar Energy.  Did you know we have 12 solar panels on the roof of B block?

You can find out more about our solar panels on our Schoolgen blog.

Today we read a really cool book called Chip and Chirpy Meet the Sun.

You can read this book online (open the link, right click and select 'play'):

For writing we retold the story.  We also did a puzzle, some colouring and discovered some new solar energy vocabulary and earned ourselves Solar Energy certificates!

Here's a sample of one of the many awesome stories the students wrote...

Division Strategies ...

In maths, we are learning simple division.  It's a bit tricky!   Just like subtraction is the opposite of addition, division is the opposite of multiplication.

We have learnt how to use repeated addition strategies to solve multiplication. Today we tried our hand at equal sharing and repeated subtraction to solve division.

Take a look at these videos ...

Timely Reminder...

The huge earthquake we experienced this morning and the many aftershocks serve as a reminder that we live on shaky isles!

Here's some helpful tips for helping your child cope with the aftermath of a large earthquake: Spinoff - Tips for parents

Remember - if there's more aftershocks: Drop, Cover, Hold.

There is a fabulous Civil Defence site for children, presented by Stan the dog (Civil Defence mascot for children). You can visit the site by clicking here.  There are some great resources on there including games.

Keep Informed...

If you're on Facebook, follow our school's page for updates on school events, news and closures.

Let's Entertain You - Performing Arts...

Over the last few weeks we have been exploring the idea of 'entertainment'.  What is entertainment?  What is art?  What sort of arts are there?  We have had lots of questions and are unravelling them through discussion and exploration.

We have had a great dabble into art over the last couple of weeks.  We have used different medium, tools and genres (types) of art.  We have even made our own art gallery in the classroom!

This week we are delving into the performing arts.  We have been lucky to have a few visitors this year put on amazing performances for us including a puppet show, music, dance and cultural shows.  We have been enjoying remembering these shows.

Yesterday we had great fun doing a Ten-Minute-Paper-Bag-Puppet challenge.  We all got a plain, brown paper bag and used our discovery materials, felt pens and things to create our very own puppet.

Look at all our fabulous puppets.
Today we shared our ideas about our puppets with each other.  We made up a name for our puppet and decided what they were (animal, person, robot etc) and a little bit of background about them.  Some of us wrote about our puppets during free writing today.

This afternoon we did another Ten-Minute challenge.  This time we worked in small groups with other students and their puppets.  We had 10 minutes to come up with a short play, and then performed them for the class.

Here are some of our plays.  We're looking forward to the rest of them tomorrow...

What's Happening in Maths?

We're learning how to do multiplication.  It can be very tricky but we are learning some great strategies and ideas to help us.

We are learning how to read arrays and solve x problems...

We made our own arrays and had turns trying to work each other's out.
Some of them were really big.
We are also learning to use our knowledge of skip counting, doubles and halves to help us solve x problems ...

Year 2 Discovery - Let's Entertain You...

Today for Discovery, students in year 2 had a choice about what genre of entertainment they wanted to explore.  There were options of music and dance, drama and oral language, visual arts, theatre and in B5 we had a Toi - Māori Arts exploration room.

There were lots of things for the students to choose from.  Some made ...

Hei Tiki, weaving, Moko designs ...

rākau sticks, a Māori 'performance stage' and other creative structures...

Buddy Class - Let's Make Art...

Inspired by our recent trip to the Dowse Museum, we decided to make some abstract art using white shapes on black and coloured backgrounds.

We folded paper into shapes and cut bits out.  Then we constructed our pieces of art using ALL the bits ... the cool cut-outs (like snowflakes) and the little offcuts too.

We made so much mess but had a lot of fun.  Here are some of our finished pieces.  We think they look pretty amazing.
